Our Lenz's Law Disc is a simple yet beautiful interactive demonstrating the concept of electromagnetic induction. A group of magnets are enclosed in a disc with an aluminum back. When the disc is rotated, the magnets slide down at a rate much more slowly than they would from gravity alone. Why? Although the aluminum back is not magnetic, it is a conductor of electricity. The sliding magnets induce an electrical field in aluminum which in turn creates a secondary magnetic field. This interacts with the magnets dramatically slowing their decent and even causing them to slightly float in the air above the aluminum!
